Baker Testing Services, Inc. offers enhanced ultrasonic inspection using the time-of-flight diffraction (TOFD) technique. TOFD provides extremely reliable and rapid single-pass weld inspection.

TOFD is relatively unaffected by flaw size, location, position or shape which sometimes may impact reflection-based UT flaw detection and sizing techniques.

The typical equipment for a TOFD weld examination uses two probes geometrically aligned on either side of the weld. The probes are aimed at the same point in the weld volume. The entire weld is then flooded with ultrasound allowing inspection of the entire volume using a single uniaxial scan pass along the weld length.

A TOFD scan generates digitized gray scale ultrasonic images which are evaluated for flaws.
